So we all know that feeling- when you spot an amazing light fixture and fall completely in love with it. Only to realise that it is a complete budget breaker. Well, never fear, I have some ideas that will make you whoop with joy.
Why not try some alternative lighting ideas?
Have you ever considered baskets? These sells at Mr. P and Sheet Street for around R199; a total steel. Cluster three together on different heights or make a strong statement by hanging them in a row.
Another super cheap and easy idea is to use lanterns. These are available from most home décor stores for anywhere between R199 and R299. You might have to drill a small hole in the top. Simply extend the wire and let the bulb hang in the lantern. Hang these from the ceiling using small hooks. Try a cluster, one big solitary lantern for a statement or hang three at different heights to the side of the room for a Moroccan feel. The world is your oyster.
A birdcage is another cute way of customizing your lighting. Cut a way the bottom of an ornate steel cage, many of the purely decorative ones come without a bottom to start with. Hang it upside down on the roof, and there you have a very special ‘chandelier’.
And then there is always the trusty Chinese lantern. You can get these from the China mall at R20 a lantern. Hang three under each other, cluster them, spread them out, and use them inside or out- these are always a great bet.
My links got a bit confused and I’m not sure where these images are from apologies.
So there you have it: lighting for a bargain. Would you try any of these ideas? Have you come up with any other light alternatives?
